Diamond Ring Buyers' Guide

Introduction

If you need help, please contact us we are very happy to answer questions.

At 1791 Diamonds Ltd, we only sell beautiful, high quality diamonds. Our strict policy with regard to main stones, e.g. the centre stone of a solitaire, or all the stones in a 3-stone ring is:

Always Excellent or Very Good Cut (the very top grades) e.g. diamonds with exceptional fire and brilliance (sparkle);

Always the extreme top end (D-H) colour grades in our Signature Collection e.g. they look stunning;

Always the top D-J colour grades in all collections e.g. very beautiful, bright diamonds;

Typically VS or VVS clarity in our Signature Collection e.g. exceptional stones with no visible blemishes to the naked eye;

Always SI or better clarity in all collections. e.g. no blemishes that can easily be seen without a magnifying glass/jeweller's loupe.

We have chosen this policy because we believe it means you will never be disappointed. We always provide an independent certificate which we think is something you should demand from any retailer. Always ask for the specification of the diamond you are buying because you may be disappointed later when you find imperfections or realise it wasn't good value for money.

The key things to consider when buying a diamond engagement ring are:

  1. Your Budget
  2. The Ring Design
  3. The Diamond Shape, Size, Quality, and Certification
  4. Ring Size
  5. Customer Service

Your Budget

In general, people spend about two months' salary on a diamond engagement ring. However, what you spend is up to you and what you can afford. Decide on your budget, and don't let a pushy sales person make you spend more.

The Ring Design

Choose a ring design that matches your fiancée's character and lifestyle. A low setting, and simple ring, would suit a slightly reserved, or sporty person. A more flamboyant person might prefer a more elaborate ring. Someone who does physical work with their hands or enjoys lots of outdoor activities may prefer the tougher platinum over the slightly softer 18kt gold.

Diamond Shape

There are many diamond shapes to choose from. The most popular shapes are round brilliant and princess.

We have nine different shapes to choose from, including various fancy shapes.

On the right you will see a few examples of some shapes that we offer and how they look when they are set into a solitaire ring. Learn more about diamond shape.

Diamond Size

A diamond is measured in carats. Carats are a measure of weight, each carat being equivalent to 200 milligrams. Carat weight roughly relates to size, as you can see below. We thought it may be useful for you to see the approximate size of different carat weights - but remember carat is really weight, not size. The chart is only for illustrative purposes and is not exact. Learn more about carat size.

Diamond Quality

The quality of a diamond affects its price. A perfectly proportioned, clear, flawless stone will cost a great deal more than one with minor imperfections. Determining the quality of a diamond is actually a complex process. It involves examining how it was cut, what colour it is, and whether it has any defects - referred to as clarity.

Certification

diamond certification education what is We believe that it is important for you to know that your diamond is what we say it is. We therefore certify all our diamonds above 0.3carat through independent grading laboratories here in NZ. Learn more about certification.

Ring Size

Rings can be re-sized, but it is important to order the correct size. Designs differ, and re-sizing your particular ring may only allow for a small enlargement or reduction.  Secondly - and perhaps more importantly - if you are planning a surprise proposal, you really want to be sure the ring is going to glide beautifully onto your fiancée's finger as soon as she's shouted a happy "Yes!"

For this reason, we supply FREE Ring Sizers.
