Choose an Engagement Ring that will suit your partner

The most important thing to consider when shopping for engagement rings is that the rings you consider actually suit your partner! Always take into account your partner's: lifestyle; occupation; personality; and of course their fashion preferences.

Engagement Ring Finance

We offer interest free finance on all of our engagement rings.

Our finance option allows you to split the total cost of your engagement ring into 5 payments that can be paid off over 6 months. We send you your engagement ring as soon as the first payment has been made.

See our section: engagement ring finance for further information, or simply select an engagement ring to buy in our online shop, and select interest-free finance, as the last step.

What shape of diamond would you like in your Engagement Ring? Princess, oval, pear, marquise, asscher, radiant, emerald...

There are many different diamond shapes to choose from. The most popular diamond shape for Engagement Rings is the Round Brilliant. All other Diamond Shapes are called "fancy shapes". The Princess Cut Engagement Ring is the most popular of the fancy shapes.

1 Carat Diamond Engagement Ring?

Diamonds are measured in Carats which is a measure of weight. One carat weighs 200 milligrams (0.2 grams).

A round brilliant diamond weighing one carat will be roughly 5mm in diameter.

When looking at the engagement rings in our online shop, please remember you can choose any size of diamond you like in order to match the budget you have in mind.

How important is Diamond Colour?

The most valuable diamonds are colourless. These are however rare and can be very expensive (we do have some!).

Most diamonds have a very faint hint of colour even if they look clear white to the untrained naked eye. Diamond colour is measured on a scale from D to Z. You can choose whatever colour you like when you purchase an engagement ring from our online shop (although we don't sell grades K through Z because those have noticeable colour).

Its actually quite hard to tell the colour of a diamond once it is in an engagement ring.

What is the Diamond Clarity?

The most valuable diamonds are completely flawless. These are extremely rare and very expensive (we do have some!).

Although most diamonds look flawless to the untrained naked eye, most have very tiny inclusions or blemishes which can be seen with a 10x magnifier. You can choose whatever clarity you like, when you buy an engagement ring from our online shop (although we don't stock the I grades or below because these have very noticeable flaws).

If ordering a reasonably large stone, then you will want to choose at least a VS2, otherwise an SI1 or 2 is the lowest to go with.

Choosing Diamond Cut

To make natural rough diamonds suitable for Engagement Rings they must be cut and polished. The diamond cut grade states how well this has been done. The scale is: poor, fair, good, very good and excellent.

An ideal diamond will reflect as much light back out of the face of the diamonds as possible. Ideal diamonds are given a very good to excellent cut grade.

At 1791 Diamonds New Zealand we only sell Engagement Rings with high quality diamonds of a very good or excellent cut. Cut makes a big difference to how a diamond looks.

Diamond Grading Certificate

diamond certificateAlways insist on an Independent Diamond Grading Certificate, when buying an engagement ring. Your visual inspection in a shop is not good enough, because only an expert could tell you if the diamond is of the quality that warrants the price you are being asked to pay.

Diamond Certificates outline in detail the quality of your diamond, including diamond carat size, diamond colour, diamond cut, diamond clarity etc.

If you choose to insure your diamond ring, your diamond certificate will be used by the valuer to help place a value on your ring for insurance purposes.

At 1791 Diamonds New Zealand we provide an independent diamond grading certificate with all of our Engagement Rings.

What is the difference between Gold and Platinum?

All of our Engagement Rings are available in 18kt Gold or Platinum. Gold is a very popular choice for engagement rings because it is more affordable. Platinum carries a higher price tag is but has the benefit of being a stronger metal and it is also hypoallergenic.

All of our Engagement Rings can be made in 18kt white gold, yellow gold, rose gold or Platinum.
