White Gold is actually an alloy of mainly pure gold and other metals such as Palladium, Silver, Copper and a small amount of Zinc and Nickel. The surface of a white gold ring is also plated in Rhodium to give it a beautiful lustrous look.

White Gold engagement rings and diamond rings look much like a platinum ring, but it is important to note that platinum is stronger, never needs re-plating (although occasionally it may need repolishing by a jeweller) and is also hypo allergenic. However, Platinum is more expensive than white gold.
